Climbing Roses on a Historic Public Building

Scroll

Following my time as Head Rose Gardener, I wanted to stay involved at Elizabeth Park so I volunteered to train and maintain climbing roses growing up the sides of the park’s historic office building. I planted two heritage varieties: a vigorous pink rambler called ‘Peggy Martin’ and a caramel-hued noisette rose called ‘Reve d’Or.’ Owing to the site’s microclimate along a sheltered, south-facing chimney, this is likely the northernmost example of ‘Reve d’Or’ in the eastern United States. I installed an inconspicuous wire trellis system in order to train the roses while protecting the building’s exterior.
